South Devon Cattle

The Cows you will see on Brimpts Farm are the traditional native South Devon breed. The herd is known as a suckler herd which means that the calves are born and bred on the farm. South Devon Cattle have a coat of medium red with no other markings – any signs of white or other darker colouring usually suggest they have another breed crossed in. South Devon Cattle are renowned for their docile temperament and good maternal ability. They are not easily agitated or aggressive making them easier to handle.

The South Devon Cattle at Brimpts calve once a year and are weaned from their mothers at around 8 months. The calves remain on the farm until they reach 18 months to 2 years old. The beef farming on Brimpts is known as extensive farming - where our Cows have a large area to graze the wildlife rich landscape you have read about as you have walked the Biodiversity Trail. The South Devon beef produced from our cattle is renowned for its tenderness, flavour and distinctive marbling. Cows are primary producers providing food for humans.
