Stop 10:
Common Dog Violet
(Viola riviniana)
Violets are a widespread wildflower known for their striking purple colour. The leaves are heart shaped and dark green in colour. The flowering season is from April to October. Here on Brimpts you will find Dog Violets in the hedgerows and grasslands.
The common Dog Violet provides a source of food for rare butterflies such as the High Brown Fritillary which is also found at Brimpts Farm.
The Ancient Greeks used violets in herbal medicine and they were used to help cure diseases. Some violets have been used in perfume for centuries.
